Approximately 1 in 7 women will develop a postpartum mood disorder. When I was a new mom, many years ago, I found myself struggling to adjust to the demands of new motherhood. I did not know where to turn or how to get help. As a postpartum doula over the course of 8+ years, I have encountered dozens of new mamas who deal with a postpartum mood challenge. As a postpartum doula, I can provide non-clinical support to ease a women’s transition into her new role as a mother. I listen to her confusion, fears & concerns and validate her feelings and encourage her to talk with a therapist who specializes in PMAD, speak with her healthcare provider and consider joining a peer support group. I bring awareness to this matter in all my childbirth classes. Knowledge is powerful. Here is a great article providing insight to the tell-tale symptoms of PMAD.
